-
- Amigas use standard IBM modems. You'll need 14.4 at the minimum, 28.8
- preferred. Much of the software you'll need can be retrieved via FTP.
-
- >2. Are there online resources I can download? If so, where?
-
- Try the Aminet archives...one of the largest and best collections of software,
- ever. Some FTP sites to try:
-
- ftp.netnet.net
- ftp.wustl.edu
- ftp.luth.se
-
- Those three are probably the best sites to access from the U.S. The Aminet
- archives are typically located in the pub/aminet directory.

- Required:

- comm/tcp/AmiTCP-demo-40.lha
- comm/tcp/ppp1_45.lha
- dev/gui/mui33usr.lha

- E-mail+Usenet:

- comm/mail/THOR222_inet.lha
- comm/mail/THOR222_main.lha
-
- or

- comm/mail/Voodoo-1.209.lha (mail only).

-
- If her Amiga 2000 is the bare bones, that is, has no graphics card and no
- 68030 accelerator, you may be better off scrapping it. I love the Amiga and
- its operating system, but unfortunately being "productive" with it requires
- tons of CASH. The current cost/performance ratios do not benefit new users,
- users on a budget, and existing Amiga users with old machines.
-
- I regularly troubleshoot and configure Macintosh computers for my 9 to 5
- routine, and the Mac is definitely the best bet for those on a budget. I'm
- talking in the $1000-$2000 range...The new Power Mac 7200s are fairly nice,
- but you'll need a lot of memory...Your best bet may be to pick up an old used
- 650 series (Quadra, Centris). They use standard 72-pin SIMMs and have NuBus
- slots to easily add a graphics card. And you won't have to deal with any of
- the "growing pains" that PowerMac users experience...but you can always buy a
- card in the future ($$$) or simply buy a PowerMac.
-
- Some Amiga readers on this newsgroup may consider my words "blasphemous"...but
- I'm simply telling the truth to the best of my ability. I love the Amiga, and
- would love to replace my A3000 with an AGA something-or-other, but the
- expenses involved do not favor my situation. If I truly needed to, I could
- pick up a Mac with an educational discount with small monthly payments.
-
- Hope this info helps.
